Cotton Art Paper: The Base for Creation

What is Cotton Art Paper?

Cotton-based art paper, often known as rag paper, is a luxurious type of paper made primarily from cotton lintersfine fibres left on the cottonseed after ginning. The paper’s quality is dictated by the cotton content, ranging from 25% to 100%, with higher percentages indicating better longevity and strength. It’s ideal for techniques requiring durability and water absorbency, like watercolour painting or etching.

Importantly, the use of raw cotton and its by-products in paper production promotes sustainability. Cotton-based art paper offers a robust, environmentally friendly medium for creating enduring artwork.

Why is Cotton Art Paper So Popular Among Artists?

Cotton-based art paper’s popularity among artists is largely due to its high-quality texture, providing an exceptional surface for a range of art forms. Its durability and longevity, especially with high cotton content, resist aging and discoloration, preserving artworks for extended periods.

Fun fact: Did you know that enduring historical documents like the U.S. Constitution are written on cotton-based rag paper?

Unparalleled versatility is the standout feature of cotton-based art paper that artists adore. Be it for watercolours that need to flow freely, the detailed impressions required in printmaking, or the subtle shades in charcoal drawing, this paper effortlessly rises to the challenge. It morphs and adapts to meet the demands of diverse artistic expressions, making it a prime choice for artists across mediums. Amidst this versatility, it also holds an eco-friendly badge. Produced traditionally from cotton by-products, it supports waste reduction and sustainability – a nod to the growing environmental consciousness in art.

Types of Cotton for Paper Production

Today, producers are also incorporating cotton by-products like comber noil, along with raw staple cotton and cotton linters, thereby diversifying raw materials and further supporting environmental consciousness in art.

Cotton Linters: Short fibres that remain on the cottonseed after ginning are transformed into fine, smooth, and durable art papers. Their absorbent nature makes linter-based paper a favoured choice for artists who work with mediums requiring significant absorption, such as watercolours and inks.

Cotton Comber Noil: This by-product of the cotton yarn manufacturing process contributes to robust and absorbent art paper. The shorter fibres, removed during the combing process, lend strength and durability to the paper, suitable for heavy art applications.

Recycled Cotton (Rags): Cotton textiles, when recycled, form papers with rich textures and superb durability. The rigorous recycling process results in acid-free paper, a go-to for artists seeking an archaic touch and the certainty of longevity.

Pure Cotton / Raw Staple: Directly derived from the cotton plant, pure cotton forms the pinnacle of art paper—100% cotton paper. Renowned for superior strength and archival quality, it is the prime choice for important documents, fine art prints, and applications that demand high quality and longevity.
